Billboards work like normal text link advertisements with one major difference; instead of the anchor text driven link pointing to your domain, they point to a sub-page on the publisher's site which in turn links back to you however you see fit. In short, it's an entire page about you, the advertiser, hosted on someone else's site. There are several different strategies that make these highly effective.

For example, you might choose to use a billboard as an expert document  by using an informative article about your vertical or topic and linking out to a few authority sites in addition to your domain as a resource or reference. Or, you might decide to leverage the billboard as an Advertorial where you actively promote your brand/site/product/services and link to very specific pages that support your anchor texts. Either way, you can include as much information as you want..including images. And the more keyword-rich the content is, the more relevant the page becomes giving greater strength to the links on that page.

Billboard pages are optimized for search, as well, so they will inherit things like link equity and Google Page Rank. Most often, we will see the billboard page themselves begin to rank organically for the main anchor text used. It's commonly known that embedded, content driven links are the most attractive of all inbound links.
